      Description

      Dear Brenndan,
I am happy to read of your interest to our emerging network of Internet
Innovation Hubs! Ireland is defintely in our priority radar, so we would
be thrilled to see how we could work together with your Mill. Attached a
short document on our project I3H which is building this network in
co-operation with both FIWARE and EIT ICT Labs communities.

We decided to keep this first call open until the end of the month, Nov
30, as we would still have time enough (though tight) to keep the
selection deadline of December. There will be another call closing March
31, 2014 and you can start applying to that already if you don't make it
by Nov 30. I suggest you have a look at our open call application form
at f6s (also attched), don't hesitate to ask if you need any
clarification in filling it, should you wish to attach any further
documents, media, you can also mail them to me.
Below the "standard" call announcement to explain the call process and
      the next planned steps.

Many thanks again and kind regards,
      Susanna Avessta

Tap into the flows - Open call open for Internet Innovation Hubs

The I3H project announces its open call for Internet Innovation Hubs
open. We invite hubs interested to apply to join this emerging network
of Internet Innovation Hubs; we offer a process to become an Internet
Innovation Hub, we offer support and coaching to pass the so called
incubation stage gates, ultimately to reach sustainability via viable
services, structured processes, and a carrying network, which offers
quality, scale and top contacts globally for its member hubs.

      Go tohttp://www.f6s.com/i3h/apply# <http://www.f6s.com/i3h/apply>and
      fill in the application form!

      Remember to differentiate:
      1) the application to become an Internet Innovation Hub (IIH) and to be
      supported by I3H project
      2) the contest for winning a 60k€ grant.

We look obviously more at the first point and have only limited,
marginal resources for the second one. Furthermore, we strive for
SUSTAINABILITY of FIWARE as a collective effort, hence the matter to be
granted or not should be merely symbolic. All already FIPPP or EIT ICT
Labs partnering organisations are not eligible for such a grant. Most
importantly, the objective of the I3H project is to develop a business
plan for IIH network that makes good sense for any hub to be part of it.
The initial model for this is being discussed as we speak.

The criteria for applying the membership of IIH network, to be supported
both in terms of FIWAREness as well as in tuned innovation hub metrics,
are listed here below (extract from the document defining IIH). Note
that we don't expect all these aspects to be at the top level at the
application phase, but yet on a track and the plan for evolving in them
clear in hub candidate's mind (hence the stage gate process we foresee
      for "graduating" as an IIH).

      1.**Physical hotspot

Internet Innovation Hub is a physical meeting place, real people, real
office space. Certainly virtual means are part of the IIH service
delivery, but it needs to also provide dedicated people at dedicated
space and excellent means to co-work, match-make, share knowledge and
      spar each other.

      2.**Rooted in a territory

Internet Innovation Hub is well-linked, established and known in its
region. The connection to the regional policymakers and actors is
paramount for the sustainability of the IIH. This criteria has also
another dimension, addressing the relevance (in terms of FIWARE based
business), innovativeness and its potential of the region in question.
The potential impact of the specific region in leveraging on FIWARE is high.

      3.**Eco-system

The physical clustering of related activities is a proven business
effect that increases the activity within the cluster. IIH has the
ability to mobilize web entrepreneurs, mentors, investors, students,
academia, public sector innovators and industry representatives. This
comes largely from the regional status and linkages. Furthermore, the
IIH is preferably connected to one or more leading research
institutions, has a deal flow of startups and ideas; has partnerships
with large industry, collaboration on intra- and extra-entrepreneurship
with them; has connections to SME associations and clusters; and taps
into financers of various kind: business angels, venture capitalists,
foundations and national, European funds. A clear added value is the IIH
offering for testing and validating the idea, prototype, or technology
      at the early stage.

All listed involvement within the eco-system goes deeper than simple
interest or pointers offered. It assumes a commitment from the
stakeholders in question to work closely together and to engage with the
      activities of the IIH.

4.**Connections and access to relevant infrastructures

Internet Innovation Hub supports application economy being built on
targeted verticals: urban life and mobility, health & wellbeing, energy,
smart spaces, thereby the IIH has to have access to such infrastructures
and act as the facilitator and midwife for new services developed
addressing these domains. We expect that IIH’s will provide (at least
within a short-term roadmap) access to open data, which the public
bodies and respective eco-system actors provide.

5.***Connection and access to an incubator providing business
      development and backend services*

Professional business development and acceleration are paramount
services that the Internet Innovation Hub should guarantee to its
customers, be they startups, SMEs or corporate entrepreneurs. The hub
may focus on a certain customer segment, but the BD needs to be a
systemic process and of the high quality. IIH could also include in its
portfolio the backend services offered to entrepreneurs: platform for
running a business, accounting, legal and fiscal expertise to name a few
      services.

      6.**FIWARE technology and assets.

/Knowledge and instance of FIWARE including vertical platforms where
      applicable and available/

Internet Innovation Hub is not IIH until it adopts and implement FIWARE
      platform. This means

      a) technical expertise on the platform in house of IIH,

      b) providing solid and stable access to FIWARE technology in such an
extent that it can serve scaling businesses flawlessly and fluently
within targeted IIH reach and under potential business domain or
regional constraints (e.g. concerning privacy and security issues),

      c) active and regular liaison with FIWARE platform caretakers.

FIWARE catalogue comprises not only the mature, production ready generic
enablers developed by FI-Ware project, but also compliant (maturity and
licensing) specific enablers produced in use case projects of FI PPP
      phase 2.

      /Education on FIWARE technologies/

FIWARE offers and develops online learning material for its adopters. In
addition to facilitating and instructing FIWARE implementers benefiting
from this online material, Internet Innovation Hub should be connected
to organization(s) providing FIWARE education also with systemic,
followed programs including real-time webinars, camps, tutored
hackathons and schools to be organized at hubs.

      /Testing and validation platforms/

As an essential element of Lean Startup described in Chapter 1.1,
Internet Innovation Hub should provide easy access to platforms and
tools for testing and validating the business idea, prototype and the
final product/service. These open infrastructures and platforms are
available as part of FIWARE ecosystem across the Europe, Internet
Innovation Hub should have educated staff on advising FIWARE
implementers to conduct appropriate tests for measuring the performance,
maturity and match (to the technology APIs, to the market expectations)
of the built service in the iterated Lean Startup Process.

      7.**Business plan

Internet Innovation Hubs are set up to last, to serve beyond the
lifetime of FI PPP initiative, thereby they need to have a financial
basis to sustain. The Internet Innovation Hub does not start from
scratch, but is an established legal entity that has an existing deal
flow and respective finances. The finance of the hub can be public,
private or a combination of both, they need to sustain their services to
the new business to be developed by a viable budget and a business plan.
The Internet Innovation Hub incubation process puts effort on evaluating
and following the business plan behind the planned IIH activities.

Here attached also the application form in pdf, should some of you have
difficulties using f6s platform. You can send the filled in application
form to any of us in the I3H consortium (or just
      me:susanna.avessta@eitictlabs.eu
<susanna.avessta@eitictlabs.eu>), feel free to attach any more
      information you see relevant.

The first cut off date for selecting the pioneering hubs into the stage
gate process is November 30, 2014. All applications will be
peer-reviewed by three independent reviewers and selected ones to be
decided at the consensus meeting on December 11. Note that there will be
a similar selection process at the end of March 2015.*
      ***

      **

The invitation for the fifteen (15) shortlisted hubs will be sent out on
      December 15 to join the*1st**bootcamp in mid-January 2015.*The bootcamp
agenda promises the following four things:

      *1) A contest for the 15 pre-selected hubs for a 60k€ grant[1].*Prepare
a plan and a pitch why your hub should get the grant. Note that only
hubs which are not already part of EIT ICT Labs or FIWARE community are
eligible for such a grant. However, all hubs also inside EIT ICT Labs
and FIWARE community are more than welcome to become an IIH and submit
      their application.

*2) IIH conceptual training for all invited hubs.*We will share with you
our EIT ICT Labs nodes’ experience on bringing innovations to life
accross Europe, how does it work for us. Furthermore, we introduce the
Internet Innovation Hub incubation process, the IIH stage gate model in
      detail.

*3) FIWARE technology training for all invited hubs.*We offer the full
basic course of FIWARE technologies for future FIWARE coaches. At the
end of the training the participants will get a FIWARE basic trainer
      certificate.

*4) Hacking together the first version of the IIH network.*What central
support, which governance structure, what is missing, and how to join
forces? Prepare your network epic and let’s get it scrummed done.

      Looking forward for your candidature!
