Description
Hello,
my name is Sara and I work for Encore Lab, a Spanish SME whose main activity
consists of deploying sensor networks in different contexts, getting data
from them and analyzing it so we give our clients useful information for
their business.
We heard about FIWARE and we thought it'd be a good platform to help us
creating web/mobile services for our clients or to manage our sensor
networks in a unified way, even allowing us to share information with other
developers and data producers/consumers.
But when I tried to start using it I just couldn't. I've been struggling
with philosophical considerations about the platform for the last two weeks.
I cannot find any document explaining how to proceed step by step. I went
through the catalogue with no success, I registered in the Fi-lab and
couldn't get anything done, I watched an endless list of videos and it's
just impossible. Everybody publishing stuff out there seems to think the
reader knows a lot of things about the platform and how to use it.
All I know now is that I need a Unix system to install all the GEs. No idea
about how to connect to a sensor (I succeeded on getting some data using the
code examples of the Quick Start for Programmers of the Orion Context Broker
documentation, why can't I do something similar with one of my nodes.?)
Another big mystery for me right now is how databases work here: are there
public ones linked to projects? Each programmer builds its own? Where are
they hosted.?
I really need some help with this, from knowing the system requirements to
install all the necessary GEs, which are the usual programming environments
supporting the APIs, how does the communication with the database happen...
Are there project examples I can compile and use as an example once I'm all
set up?
I'd really appreciate anything helping me not understanding how everything
should work but how it actually does from the perspective of somebody who
wants to start playing with the functionality to get an idea of the system.
Thank you very much. Kind regards,
Sara Madariaga

Dear Sara,
Just wondering if you are contacting from an accelerator SME, is that the case?
We do appreciate your interest in FIWARE, please try to meet us in all the different open events where FIWARE team is available and we suggest you try to attend to one of our developers week (free of charge, see them here http://www.fiware.org/events/category/workshops/ ) the next one is in Vienna next week, but maybe is too short time notice. But see often the calendar for future ones. Many of your questions can be openly answered by our technicians during these training weeks.
Now, we are finding people like you feeling a bit lost and we decided to do something about it. This is why we have this on our home page (http://www.fiware.org/):
[cid:image003.png@01D093E4.EEF82210]
You need to click on "FIWARE Developers" you get to http://www.fiware.org/developers-entrepreneurs/. There you have a rough explanation of all this.
FIWARE is providing the so called Generic Enablers, means that they can be applied to no matter what industry, they are general purpose artefacts. You need to see what’s in the catalogue and use those that are useful for you in whatever scenario you have. The best approach is to go to the catalogue (http://catalogue.fiware.org/enablers) and see our current offer. The catalogue concentrates the information of all the available GEs with all the pointers to the manuals, open specs, terms of use, etc.
But you don’t need to install ALL GEs, that would be too much, just try to get those that are useful to you only. You can get an account here https://account.lab.fiware.org/sign_up/ (however now you can’t get a trial account right now, we are fixing it now. I’ll try to grant you access anyway as soon as possible) anyway once you have it, it will lasts for two weeks, and then apply for an updated account.
We also have online eLearning courses (http://edu.fiware.org/)
Also, here you have examples of success applications developed with FIWARE
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLR9elAI9JscQuZpRe69y4DxE7KKr34UjM
This is an example of an application using some FIWARE enablers.
https://github.com/Bitergia/fiware-chanchan
We are trying to improve our communication and our information system, and usability for people like you, please bear with us as we are trying do our best.
Please, let us know if you need additional information.
I’ll keep informed you about the trials account (we think in one week this issue will be solved after June 1st).
Thanks again, and best regards,
Malena

Dear Sara,
Just to add up a few pieces of information to the reply from my colleague.
1) You can always contact each one of the GE owners directly using the contact details on the catalogue (left frame on each pre-GE entry)
2) If you are on the Acceleration Programme you have a dedicated coach who should primarily address your concerns. You can also contact us but the coach should theoretically have time to guide you more thoroughly.
We have experienced a few problems in FIWARE Lab due to massive demand and we are progressively recovering from them.
Best regards,
Miguel

Dear all,
Thank you very much for the information. We’re not part of any acceleration
program right now. We ‘d like to participate in the currently open calls
because we have a few interesting ideas which could be feasible.
Unfortunately, we’re experiencing troubles when trying to use the FIWARE
technology due to the lack of technical documentation about the
functionality of the different APIs. We already know (roughly) which are the
most interesting ones for us but didn’t download any of them.
Could you please tell me what is needed to start writing simple code to
connect to sensors and try to retrieve data from them? I mean, the OS,
database system, programming language, etc. which are common to most of the
GEs (or, at least, recommended). Is contacting each of the owners the best
way of doing it?
Thank you very much for your kindness and your prompt responses. Kind
regards,
Sara

This is an example of an application using some FIWARE enablers.

We are trying to improve our communication and our information system, and usability for people like you, please bear with us as we are trying do our best.
Please, let us know if you need additional information.
I’ll keep informed you about the trials account (we think in one week this issue will be solved after June 1st).
Thanks again, and best regards,
Malena
