      Description

      To Whom It May Concern,

Hello! We are a group of young business information technology students and co-owners working on a project at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences that aims at using FIWARE Technologies for a new videographic learning platform to be used in schools, universities and creative industries. In addition, our project aims at submitting a proposal for the second round of CreatiFi Program in August-September 2015.

We are interested in few features needed to implement our project’s backend. We were wondering if you would be kind enough to assist us. We basically need to implement just a few functions in the current project. All we need is a system that provides users to upload videos on our web site(from their PCs or web cameras), watch and download them later. The technical idea is in merging some small video clips(1-2 minutes averagely) into one long video and allow user to download the whole thing.

We would be very much obliged if you could help us to chose the technologies or tools that we can use to develop our project. We have heard about the service called “Kurento” (https://www.kurento.org <https://www.kurento.org/>) but we doubt if it fits required functionality or it is better to pick an another service. We wonder if you would do us a favour and help to do this choice. Any instructions, manuals or tutorials about how to use any of the suggested tools will be highly appreciated.

We shall do our best to make our project done. Thank you very much!

      Best regards,
      Aleksandr Cherkashin
      Developer

        Hi,
In principle Kurento does not provide the kind of features you are looking for. Kurento is capable of streaming media and storing media into filesystem, but it's not capable "off-the-shelf" of merging several clips together into a longer one. In any case, from your mail, I appreciate a high degree of ambiguity in your requirements. You should try to define more precisely them if you want to get useful support. Some specific points you should consider are:

        • When you speak about users "uploading" videos, what do you mean?
          • Users activate their webcam and the video is catched in real time?
          • Users upload a pre-recorded file?
        • When you speak about "merging" videos, what do you mean?
          • The videos are reproduced in your website one after another? (this does not require merging)
          • A large file is created putting together smaller files and users dowload the file? (this can be done with a simple command line without requiring any GE)
          • What happens between a video and the following? Nothing (the change can be very abrupt), it goes to black softly? another pre-defined clip is inserted?

        Best.
