Dear,

I suggested to connect with cloud-user because some images packaged for cloud have a special account "cloud-user" and doesn't let you use the root account for remote login. Luckily this was not your case.

About the problem you have on the ssh connection the main causes in my opinion are related to network latency and/or packets loss. You should try to debug this network issues you may have, here some hints: http://serverfault.com/questions/35453/what-can-cause-slow-ssh-session

In any case, using ssh compression may help: ssh -C user@server
